Time is money and when you have a whole list of items to handle when managing a blog, who has time to learn about Photoshop?
But you’ll definitely need images for your blog.
For some or ALL of your posts.
For your logos and social media (Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter). These are the ones I am focusing on for now but feel free to add more =)
So what’s the best way to make these photos look AMAZING for your upcoming blog? Use a photo editor app like PicMonkey!
No need to learn photoshop when you can make adjustments to your images using this app.
Plus, it’s online and easy to use (note that if you do want to save images in the account, you should upgrade to a paid PicMonkey account).
So let’s jump right in and discuss what’s good about PicMonkey and why you should add it to your blogging toolbox!

PicMonkey, An Online Photo Editor
When you google “photo editor app” I’m sure PicMonkey comes up as one of the first results.
And for good reason.
It’s easy to use and user friendly as well. What’s not to like?
It was the first online photo editor I used when I needed to modify photos for my personal use.
Including this blog.
When I was just getting started, I needed to learn how to make a logo, pins for Pinterest and featured images for my posts.
There was NO way I could avoid photo editing. It’s one of easiest ways to make your blog look amazing!
So I used PicMonkey to tackle most of these tasks and if I couldn’t use PicMonkey, well I haven’t gotten to that stage yet. *crosses fingers*
But read on to see the 3 ways PicMonkey can help your brand new blog.

1. Creating a Logo for Your Blog Using PicMonkey
I’ll start with the blog logo because any starting blog will need a logo right?
Mine was really simple. And I mean really simple.
I picked a font I liked from Google fonts and then converted it into a logo.
It doesn’t require much except picking a font and maybe adding some color.
So with a few simple steps you can do it too!
And the neat thing about PicMonkey is that you can upload custom fonts to the text functionality app as well. So don’t feel like you HAVE to use the default fonts.
First, you’ll need to create a blank canvas as your starting point.
After logging into PicMonkey of course.
Click the “Create New” button towards the upper left corner.
And you’ll get to a screen like the following.
For simplicity sake, click the “blank canvas” option, where it will lead to another screen to pick the dimensions.
Now, logos can be large or small depending on your blog settings. If you’re using WordPress to build your blog, it will be dependent on the THEME.

Anyway, back to creating a logo on PicMonkey.
The logo for this blog has a size of approximately 983 x 333. But again your logo size may vary.
After setting the canvas size, you can start customizing.
It’s a drag and drop interface so put on your creative thinking cap and have fun!
If you just want text for your logo (like I did for this site).
Go to the “text” option on the left sidebar and “add text“.
Clicking this option adds an additional window with more options.
Even an option to upload your own fonts!
Uploading Custom Fonts to PicMonkey
Let’s say you explored most of the default fonts in the photo editor app aka “PicMonkey”.
And you find that you don’t like any of the fonts.
Not to worry! You can upload your own fonts!
So how do you do this?
It requires a little bit more technical knowledge. But let me guide you through it.
Find the custom font you want to upload from either Google fonts or another alternative.
Then DOWNLOAD the font file. It should be in a zip file format (ends with .zip).
Take this file and upload it to PicMonkey using the “Upload Your Fonts” option.
If you can’t find this, it’s under the “text” option window and when you select a font, the button option is at the BOTTOM.
After uploading your custom font, it will show up as an option to select.
Pretty straightforward. But ping me if you have questions!
Exporting Your Logo from PicMonkey
Feel free to customize your logo however you want! Add colors, play around with the fonts, add images, etc.
Once you’re done, you will need to export the image to your computer.
There’s a simple export button right above the editing screen in PicMonkey.
Clicking this will export your image.
Note that PicMonkey will also save this image automatically in your library. (If you signed up for an account on PicMonkey.)
And it’s pretty easy to get to it.
So don’t worry about losing your images!
Take the exported image and upload to your WordPress site and set it as your blog logo.
It’s usually under “Appearance” -> “Customize” -> “Site Identity” -> “Logo“.

It’s just a fancy font and nothing too complicated.
But wait, there’s more to PicMonkey than just making logos.
2. Using the Photo Editor App to Create Pinterest Pins
Now why is Pinterest important? It’s one of the ways you can start building traffic to your blog.
Especially when you’re just getting started.
Because at the beginning, your blog is invisible to the internet world. It has just been created and no one knows about it.
Too many bloggers start and FAIL because they don’t know how to get readers to their blog and then they give up.
So wait, how can Pinterest help build traffic?
You can create pins and imbed the pins with links to your blog. A direct connection.
Granted that your pins look great enough to be clicked on.
I can almost hear the “oohs and ahhs”.
So making Pins on Pinterest is super important. And using a photo editor app like PicMonkey is VERY useful.

How to Create a Pinterest Pin With PicMonkey
Let’s start again with a blank canvas and go over the dimensions needed.
To make a perfect Pinterest Pin (I dare you to say that three times fast!):
The dimensions need to be a 2:1 ratio and if that doesn’t make any sense, try a range of at least 735 x 1102.
735 being the width and 1102 as the height.
And I’m referring to pixels (px) as the dimensions.
You can play around with the dimensions but know that if the pin is too long, it WILL be cut off on a mobile app.
And most users of Pinterest are on mobile so don’t miss out by having a pin that gets cut off.
You will be at a HUGE disadvantage if you do.
So please be cautious with the length.
Ahem, but experimentation is key.
I’ve found that 735 x 1102 is a little too short for my pins because I use a lot of words.
So I use 735 x 1300. And you can start with this too when you’re experimenting to find the best dimensions for your pins.
Just don’t feel confined to stick to ONE size. Find out what works best for you.
And keep working on it, you’ll get better with more practice!
Adding Images for Your Pinterest Pin
How can a pin be called a pin if it doesn’t have images?
Scan through the most popular pins on Pinterest and what do you find?
At least ONE image.
If not two.
So your pin NEEDS to have images.
Uploading an image to PicMonkey is easy. Click the “add image” button towards the top of the editing window.
This will drop the image in the middle of the blank canvas.
You can then resize the image to fit your canvas (by clicking and dragging the edges of the photo).
Or if you’re feeling more creative, you can resize the images in the shape of a collage.
Or even better layer the images on top of each other for special effects.
There are lots of options. Try to be creative! (I think this is the best part of blogging!)
If a former accountant can create images without a creative bone in her body, you can too!
Exporting Your Pin Image from PicMonkey
After designing your pin, export it from PicMonkey to your computer.
Then upload to Pinterest and tag a link to it (that connects to your blog).
Otherwise, why would we spend sooo much effort in order to create good pins?
Congrats! You just created your own personal pin!
Note that it will take some time to figure out what users like to click.
So to maximize the potential of traffic, make at least 1 pin for each post from your blog.

3. Making Featured Images for Your Blog Posts
The neat thing about WordPress is that it’s highly customizable.
You can use any theme, any pictures (if you have rights to it) and configure how it looks and feels.
The issue with that is some themes prefer images with a certain size to look right.
For example, the featured images of blog posts. You know, the image right above the posts?
I’m using the Ocean WP theme (it’s a free theme) and it requires the image sizes to be 833 x 450.
Otherwise the image spills over in the post slider you see on the home page. Trust me it looks UGLY if that happens.
So I use PicMonkey to make the adjustments. And it’s SUPER EASY.
Easy as in 3 STEPS:
I create a blank canvas with those dimensions and upload the picture.
Then drag and re-size the picture to fit the dimensions.
There. As simple as that.
So what are you waiting for? Your blog isn’t going to be famous overnight!
It takes time to build traffic and images are key.
